Description

The Pinwheel Galaxy (also known as Messier 101, M101 or NGC 5457) is a very large, face-on, spiral galaxy 27 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. Its linear diameter is 170,000 light years, almost twice the size of the Milky Way. M101's absolute magnitude is -21.5, a luminosity of about 33 billion suns. Its disk contains an estimated 100 billion solar masses.
